ThePhig, SecureWorks, Atlanta, and all that jazz…

Posted on May 29th, 2010 by Ryan Reed

It's been a while but that's alright. I just like to take my time when updating. So, what's been going on in Reed's life? A few things here and there. Let's kick it off

ThePhig
Recently, you may remember that I released ThePhig to the world. Well, it was more like a small release to whoever happened to come across it. The project started as a small gallery script I created for my own personal use but as time went on, I kept adding features such as Google Maps integration, database support, etc. I even had a coworkers testing various iterations.

Fast forward to now and I'm finally up to version 3.0.7 with a relatively major update coming soon enough. I submitted ThePhig to 2 different script based sites, HostScripts and Script & Style. I wanted to help anyone out that may have wanted a relatively simple gallery.

So, how has ThePhig been since release? As of writing this post, the site has had 4181 hits, averaging 134.87 hits per day. ThePhig has been downloaded a total of 726 time (all versions) with the latest version reaching 341 downloads. There have also been a few link backs from sites that I never submitted the script to, for instance W3Avenue, Smashing Magazine's recent Twitter post, and even a few Digg submissions. I'm pretty happy with the current exposure.

One also nice little plus to the release of ThePhig was pushing my webpage, ryanreed.NET toward the top of Google when searching for searching for Ryan Reed. This to me is awesome considering how generic my name kind of is. I definitely can't complain about that.

SecureWorks and Atlanta
I recently was promoted from a Security Specialist to Security Analyst. Pretty soon, the titles will be restructured so I'm more likely to be Security Engineer pretty soon. I definitely prefer the Engineer title. Sounds a bit more professional to me. I was considering making a move to another team, as a Support Engineer for one of our dedicated teams or a Security Engineer working with the Sherlock Security Platform but decided against either for the moment.

What is in the works, though, is a move to the Atlanta office while continuing to work on the TeraGuard system. I do this mostly to live closer to my family in the south but also because I really need a change of pace from Providence or Connecticut. I should be making the move in late July or early August. No date has been set in stone quite yet but my lease is up in Providence at the end of August so I'd like to be out well before then.

That pretty much sums thing up in a nutshell. Nothing too exciting but I am pretty proud of how ThePhig is currently going and extremely excited for the Atlanta move.

ThePhig – An OpenSource PHP Image Gallery

Posted on April 11th, 2010 by Ryan Reed

So, I finally decided to properly release my image gallery script that I had been using for quite a while. Previously, this script had been going by ReedGal but I decided it didn't quite roll off the tongue properly and wasn't catchy enough. Now, don't get me wrong, Reed is an awesome name. Can't get around that and I think everyone would agree. But I needed something that was unique and different.

So came ThePhig. It made sense to me and had a unique enough name that people might remember it. Yesterday I decided to register the domain, and with the help of Chris Coyier's Document Template, I put the site up, making it easier to maintain changelogs, keep people updated, etc.

I'm pretty proud of how ThePhig has come out thus far. It's my first major project and, while the code probably isn't as optimized as it could be, it seems to work really well. So, if it's your type of thing, check out the Demo or my Gallery to see it in action.

Key Biscayne

I just got back from the trip to Key Biscayne. I'm still messing with the pictures but I have put some up on the Home Gallery. More to come in the near future.

Google Maps and Such

Posted on March 12th, 2010 by Ryan Reed

Recently, during some boredom, I started working on pulling the GPS coordinates from some of the photos I had taken. It was mostly to get ready for some vacation to Florida, Vegas, and hopefully later, Europe. I thought it'd be cool to be able to show on a Google Map. It would allow me to upload photos while on a trip and have them show up on Google Map as we went.

So the first issue I came across was getting the GPS coordinates to my photos. I don't have a GPS attachment for my camera and don't really want to have to buy one. They're not cheap. An app that myself and Randy McCaig tested on the way to Texas last year was an application for the iPhone called GeoTag. Basically, you'd give it the photo naming convention (ie DSC_0001.jpg) and then hit the capture button to capture save the GPS coords, which would be sync'd back to the photos later. The app did a great job as it would increment to the next photo name (DSC_0002.jpg) but wasn't as preferable as we had to remember to hit the capture button everytime a photo was taken.

I found another app that wasn't specifically designed for this use but would be more efficient and automated. Trailguru allows for tracking of biking, hiking, walking, driving, etc. It records the GPS coordinates over time, speed, etc. You upload the trail info after recording to their website and their site allows for exporting as a GPX file. After recording the trail, you can take the exported file and use an application like HoudahGeo to sync the GPX file with the images, based on the time taken of the photos. You only really need to leave the application running on the iPhone and sync up later. Works really well after testing.

The second issue was creating a script to map out the photos on a Google Map. It took a while but I finally managed to get the script to read all the images in a directory and display them on a map. Needs a few changes so that it displays the thumbnails when the marker is clicked but it's working a lot better then I expected.

GeoMaps

Above is a test of both Trailguru and the Google Maps script I was working on. Both worked really well and I expect to be tweaking and using the script in future vacations and such. Maybe I'll put the script up for others to use. Ah, who knows?

Life Observations

Posted on February 13th, 2010 by Ryan Reed

So, I thought I'd post something I came across but appear to have lost the link to. It came from somewhere online, that's all I can garauntee.

It's surprising how many of these hold true for me

- More often than not, when someone is telling me a story all I can think about is that I can’t wait for them to finish so that I can tell my own story that’s not only better, but also more directly involves me.

- Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong.

- I don’t understand the purpose of the line, “I don’t need to drink to have fun.” Great, no one does. But why start a fire with flint and sticks when they’ve invented the lighter?

- Have you ever been walking down the street and realized that you’re going in the complete opposite direction of where you are supposed to be going? But instead of just turning a 180 and walking back in the direction from which you came, you have to first do something like check your watch or phone or make a grand arm gesture and mutter to yourself to ensure that no one in the surrounding area thinks you’re crazy by randomly switching directions on the sidewalk.

Employee of the Year?

Posted on January 18th, 2010 by Ryan Reed

I recently won an all expenses paid trip to Key Biscayne, FL at the 'ol job. No real details yet but should be a lot of fun and was quite the surprise. It's always interesting when you start receiving messages from people congratulating you when you have no idea what they are talking about.

Recently, George updated his site. I think it looks pretty good. His previous version of the site wasn't too bad at all but it had a few small display issues.

Also related to George's update, I released version 2.4 of ReedGal. This version brings a few nice additions including making it easier to integrate the gallery into a pre-existing layout. George's gallery and Mike Aubin's gallery are good examples of how it looks when integrated. I will say that Mike's gallery reminds me that I need to add a pagination style setup for the gallery so all images aren't on one page.

ReedGal – PHP Gallery Released…

Posted on January 2nd, 2010 by Ryan Reed

I decided that after a lot of work in my free time, I'd finally release my gallery script. I recently allowed George Simons a chance to test it out. George told me he was really impressed and it did make me want to work a little harder at getting the script out there.

The gallery still has some ways to go, adding some sort of authentication for the "admin" page, etc, but I'm pretty happy with how it is currently working right now.

Check out the ReedGal page or go directly to the SourceForge page.

Happy New Years!

Posted on December 31st, 2009 by Ryan Reed

Another year gone, 2010 is now upon us. Should be an interesting year, but then again, every new year looks interesting when looking ahead.

Some New Year's Resolutions (that are bound to be ignored like everyone else)

  • Stop procrastinating and earn my CCNA
  • Actually continue working out every week instead of stopping and starting 20 times a year
  • Possibly look into new job opportunities more toward the south (I'm not a cold weather kind of guy and wouldn't mind changing things up a bit)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head but I'm sure I'll add a few on by the end of tonight.

European Vacation Incoming

Posted on December 29th, 2009 by Ryan Reed

I've been thinking about it a lot and would really like to take a vacation to Europe while I'm still this dashing, young guy. I mentioned this to one of my friends at work, Chris Teekema (Teek for short). Teek has family that actually lives in Amsterdam and said that he was looking to take a trip out there sometime this year. Definitely an opportunity has arisen.

Teek mentioned his granparents would likely allow a few of us to stay at their place in the city for free, which would be awesome. So now we're planning a trip to out to Amsterdam for sometime in late March, early April. I know it is going to be a tad pricey but I really think it'll be well worth it and an awesome experience.

So yeah, that's the plan. Should be fun if we follow through with it. Updates to come in the near future.

Note: The Gallery is back up. Yay...

Pictures from Knoxville

Posted on December 26th, 2009 by Ryan Reed

So, just a few pictures from my vacation to Knoxville this year. Nothing too exciting but I like how some of these turned out.

I am a tad disappointed in the bird picture. The shot could have been a lot better but the lighting was pretty crappy, I wasn't really ready for it, and I didn't really mess with the settings enough on the camera. Next time I'm in Knoxville, I hope to grab a better shot.
